Theta Waves, Binaural Beats, and the Focused Mind
Witches have been using sound and trance to shift their headspace before a working for a very long time. Binaural beats are just the newest tool in that old kit — here's what the science actually says, and what it doesn't.
Chanting, drumming, candle-gazing, repetitive breathwork — witches and mystics have used rhythmic, repetitive sound to slip into a different headspace before working a spell for about as long as there's been spellwork. Binaural beats are the newest version of that same old technique: two slightly different tones, one played in each ear, that your brain perceives as a single pulsing "beat" at the difference between them. A lot of practitioners reach for a "theta" track before ritual the same way earlier generations reached for a drum circle. Here's what's actually going on, and what's still an open question.
What theta actually is
Theta is one of the broad frequency bands researchers use to describe the brain's electrical activity, roughly 4–8 Hz — slower than the alert beta rhythm of an ordinary conversation, faster than the deep delta waves of dreamless sleep. It shows up during light meditation, daydreaming, the drowsy stretch right before falling asleep, and other loosely-focused, inward-turned states. That's the general territory a lot of practitioners are aiming for when they dim the lights and put on a theta track before a working: less analytical chatter, more open, receptive focus.
What the research actually shows
The theory behind binaural beats is that if you feed the brain a perceived pulse at, say, 6 Hz, its electrical activity will tend to follow along — a phenomenon researchers call the frequency-following response, or brainwave entrainment. This isn't a fringe idea with zero science behind it: a 2017 study out of Mahidol University found that a 6 Hz binaural beat measurably increased frontal midline theta activity in listeners, and a 2024 follow-up found that a month of daily 6 Hz binaural-beat listening was associated with faster reaction times and stronger attention-related brain responses in healthy adults.
That's real, published, peer-reviewed research — and it's also a much narrower claim than "binaural beats put your brain in a magic state." These are small studies, the effect sizes are modest, not every study in this space replicates cleanly, and none of them measure anything like "intention," "manifestation," or a spell's success. What the evidence actually supports is that listening to a low-frequency binaural beat can nudge your brain's electrical activity and your attention and reaction times in measurable, if modest, ways — not that it opens a channel to anything outside your own skull, and not that it plants "subliminal" content in your mind. That's a much older advertising myth, not a real feature of binaural audio.
So does that mean spells work?
This is the honest answer, not the satisfying one: whether a spell "works" in the sense of changing something outside your own mind isn't a question neuroscience is built to answer, and no study on binaural beats claims to answer it. What the research does support is something more modest and, honestly, still useful — that sound can measurably shift your attention and mental state, and that a quieter, more focused mind is a genuinely better place to set an intention from than a scattered one.
Inside a magical practice, that focused state usually isn't treated as the goal so much as the doorway into the working — it's where a spell stops being words you're reciting and starts being something you're actually directing your attention toward. Plenty of practitioners will tell you that's where the real effect of spellwork lives: not in physics, but in what a clear, repeated, ritualized act of intention does to your own follow-through, attention, and resolve over time. That's not a lesser kind of magic. It's just an honest description of the part that's easiest to actually observe.
Using it in practice
- Use headphones, not speakers. Binaural beats depend on each ear hearing a slightly different tone; playing them through speakers lets both ears hear both tones and can cancel out the effect entirely.
- Give it time. Most practitioners find 5–15 minutes before a working is enough to feel a shift — this isn't usually instant.
- Pair it with something else that already signals "ritual time" to your brain — a candle flame, incense, a chant, or simple breathwork tends to compound the effect.
- Don't drive or operate machinery while listening. A theta-leaning state is, by design, not a fully alert one.
