History & folklore
In Scotland, smoky quartz is called cairngorm, after the mountains where it was found. It decorated the handles of Highland daggers and brooches. The first 'sunglasses', used by Chinese judges in the 1100s, were made from flat panes of smoky quartz.

Where it comes from
Smoky quartz is found in Brazil, Madagascar, Switzerland and Colorado. Very dark 'smoky quartz' has sometimes been irradiated; natural pieces usually have soft, uneven colour.
