About Turquoise

Turquoise is one of the oldest protective stones, prized in ancient Persia, Egypt, Tibet and the American Southwest. It is used for protection, healing and communication.

One of the oldest protective stones across multiple cultures; genuine turquoise is often imitated.

History & folklore

Turquoise decorated Tutankhamun's funeral mask. In Persia it protected against the evil eye, and it was fixed to horses' bridles in Turkey. For many Native American peoples, including the Navajo and Zuni, it is a sacred stone.

Where it comes from

Turquoise comes from Iran, the American Southwest, China and Egypt. Most turquoise on the market is stabilised with resin. Much is imitation — dyed howlite or plastic.

Care & safety

Turquoise is porous — keep it away from water, oils and lotions. Much 'turquoise' is dyed howlite or plastic.
