History & folklore
The ancient Greeks thought clear quartz was ice frozen so hard it could never melt — the word 'crystal' comes from krystallos, 'ice'. Crystal balls for scrying were traditionally carved from quartz, and quartz was used in Japan, Scotland and Australia as a stone of seers and healers.

Where it comes from
Quartz is found worldwide; much comes from Brazil, Arkansas and Madagascar. Real quartz feels cold and heavy compared with glass, which warms quickly and often has tiny round bubbles inside.
