Pyrite's name comes from the Greek pyr, 'fire', because it sparks when struck against steel — it was used in early firearms. Prospectors in the California Gold Rush were fooled so often it became 'fool's gold'. Native American peoples polished pyrite into mirrors.

Where it comes from
Pyrite is found worldwide. Spain and Peru produce perfect cubes. It's much harder and more brittle than real gold, and gold never forms cubes.
