About Holly
Holly is the green king of midwinter. Bringing it indoors at Yule protected the house and gave the fair folk shelter. It stands for luck, protection and the Holly King who rules the dark half of the year.

History & folklore
Romans gave holly wreaths as Saturnalia gifts. In Celtic lore, the Holly King rules the dark half of the year until the Oak King defeats him at Midwinter. Cutting down a holly tree was considered very unlucky, and holly was brought indoors to shelter the fair folk during winter.

Growing & gathering
Holly is an evergreen shrub or tree. Only female plants bear berries. Cut small sprigs in December, and wear gloves — the leaves are prickly.
Holly berries are poisonous, especially to children and pets. Keep them out of reach.
