History & folklore
Tourmaline's name comes from the Sinhalese turmali, used for mixed gemstones. Dutch traders used heated tourmaline to pull ash out of their pipes, because it becomes electrically charged when warmed. Black tourmaline (schorl) was used by magicians in Africa and India as a protective talisman.

Where it comes from
Black tourmaline is found worldwide, especially in Brazil, Pakistan and Namibia. Real pieces have long, parallel grooves (striations) along their length.
Hard, but raw pieces can splinter along the striations. Water is fine briefly.
