History & folklore
Carnelian was worn by Egyptian pharaohs, and it was used in Roman signet rings because wax didn't stick to it. The Prophet Muhammad was said to wear a carnelian ring. Ancient Egyptians placed carnelian with the dead to help them on their journey.

Where it comes from
Carnelian comes from India, Brazil and Uruguay. Natural colour is often slightly patchy. Very bright orange stones with perfectly even colour may be dyed agate.
Durable. Some carnelian on the market is dyed agate — natural stones show cloudy colour when held to light.
