History & folklore
Garnet's name comes from the Latin granatum, 'pomegranate', because its crystals look like pomegranate seeds. Noah was said to use a garnet lantern on the Ark. Anglo-Saxon warriors decorated their sword hilts with garnets, as seen in the Sutton Hoo treasure.
