History & folklore
Egyptians ground malachite into eye paint, both for beauty and to protect against eye disease. It was used as green pigment for centuries. Russian tsars decorated rooms of the Winter Palace with malachite columns and vases.

Where it comes from
Most malachite comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Real malachite has concentric bands in different shades of green. Plastic imitations are lighter and warmer to the touch.
Malachite contains copper and its dust is toxic. Buy polished pieces only, never cut or sand it at home, keep it dry and never make an elixir with it.
