History & folklore
The Romans believed moonstone was formed from frozen moonlight. In India, moonstone is sacred and was laid on the tongue under a full moon to see the future. It was popular in Art Nouveau jewellery, and is the June birthstone.

Where it comes from
Moonstone comes from Sri Lanka, India and Madagascar. The blue sheen (adularescence) moves as you tilt the stone. 'Rainbow moonstone' is actually a white labradorite, and is just as lovely to work with.
Moonstone has cleavage and can crack if knocked. Avoid harsh chemicals and sudden heat.
